How to Check Whether ChatGPT Recommends Your Business

Sample free AI visibility check report for a fictional dental practice

The short answer: ask the AI the questions your customers actually ask, write down who gets named, and note which websites it cites. Do it on several engines, because they do not always agree. For one location it takes about 30 minutes.

Step 1: Write the questions customers actually ask

Think like a customer who has not heard of you yet. A good question names the service, the place and one qualifier. Skip your own brand name, because a question that already contains your name tells you nothing.

  • “Best dentist in Buffalo that takes new patients”
  • “Emergency plumber near me, open now”
  • “Personal injury lawyer in Chicago, free consultation”
  • “Honda dealer in Seattle with good service reviews”

Write ten for each location. Use the real phrasing from your reviews, your phone calls and your search data.

Step 2: Ask each engine

Run every question on ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity. Use a fresh chat each time and, where it matters, set the location the way a customer would. Answers change from run to run, so treat one result as a data point, not a verdict.

Step 3: Record what comes back

For every question and engine, note four things:

  • Whether your business is named
  • Where it appears in the list, if it is a list
  • Which competitors are named instead
  • Which websites the answer cites or clearly draws from

Step 4: Read what the AI read

AI assistants build answers from listings, review sites, directories, articles and business websites. When a competitor is named and you are not, open the sources. Is it a “top 10” article, a directory profile, a review site, a Reddit thread? Those are the places where being present and correct matters.

Step 5: Fix the basics first

  • Make your name, address, phone number and hours identical everywhere. See our Listings AI page for how we handle that across locations.
  • Claim and complete the profiles on the sources that keep appearing.
  • Answer your reviews, especially the negative ones.
  • State plainly on your own website what you do, where, and for whom.

What nobody can promise

You cannot pay to be named, and nobody can guarantee a mention. What you can do is track whether you are named, see who is named instead and why, and improve the sources the engines trust. Repeat the check monthly and watch the trend rather than any single answer.
